What is Meals on Wheels?

Cabarrus Meals on Wheels is a local, nonprofit United Way member agency established in 1974 for the purpose of delivering a nutritionally balanced, hot meal to elderly and disabled individuals in Cabarrus County determined to be in need of this service to enable them to remain independent in their own homes.

A Link to the Outside World..

Daily contact with the CMoW volunteer provides the isolated clients an opportunity for friendship and social interaction and serves as a daily check on their well-being, thus allowing peace of mind for their families.

About the service..

To be eligible for the program an individual must:

  • be a Cabarrus County resident

  • be unable, and have no one, to prepare one hot balanced meal a day

  • need the service a minimum of three (3) weeks

  • live within a Cabarrus Meals on Wheels delivery route

The meals, prepared by Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast and another caterer, are delivered Monday through Friday between 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Each meal consists of a hot meat, vegetables, bread, salad, dessert, and milk or juice.

The fee for a meal is based on a sliding scale according to income.

Sponsorships are available to those who are unable to pay for their meals.

Weekend frozen meals are available to those clients who do not have assistance on the weekend.

Special Services

Birthday bags:  The Sunshine Club provides birthday cards and bags for our clients on their birthdays.

Pet Food Program:  Meals on Wheels is trying to help thousands of senior citizen get pet food for their pets this year. Seniors need and love their pets. Seniors and Pets are a perfect combination to love and help each other and to be companions for each other. For many seniors their pets make life worth while and for the pets many seniors provide them with life.  About sixty percent of the seniors who get Meals on Wheels live with a pet. Many times a senior receives their meal from Meals on Wheels and since the senior doesn't have enough money to buy their pet food they share their Meals on Wheels with their pet.

Beholdance: a group of Middle school students from Kannapolis donate 1-pound bags of cat and dog food  to us to deliver to our clients through a program called "K-9 Krunchies and Feline Munchies."

Emergency  Canned Food Bags  We deliver donated shelf-stable food to our clients in case of inclement weather or other emergencies.

Be A Santa to a Senior:  A partner ship with Home Instead Senior Care.  Individuals choose a name from a tree at Walgreens and provide our clients with holiday gifts.
